New NFL rules clash with San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary
As football training camps open around the country this week, the sport beloved by millions for its violent collisions is confronting a cultural sea change. The NFL, after years of resistance, is taking aggressive steps to address the reality of head injuries. And that puts hard-nosed coaches such as the 49ers' Mike Singletary on the spot as they seek to heed safety concerns while still preparing players in a way they believe necessary for the brutality of a 16-game regular season. There's a growing sentiment among doctors involved in the NFL that a limit on hitting in practice sessions is a key step in preventing concussions. Dr. Thom Mayer, the medical director of the players union, advocates a 20-to-25 percent reduction. Singletary, sensitive to the growing body of research showing a link between on-field concussions and long-term cognitive dysfunction such as early-onset dementia, believes the idea makes sense. Yet he also bristles at the notion that anyone should tell him which drills to run and which to avoid. NFL - San Francisco 49ers - Mike Singletary - National Football League - Sports

Tim Kawakami: Surprise! Raiders, 49ers without turmoil
The summer forecast is in, and it's stunning: Everything points to peace and tranquility for both teams once the Raiders and 49ers open their training camps this week. This is not what any of us are used to, of course, after years of dual-franchise tension, disappointments, delusions and occasional accusations of coach-on-coach violence. But here they are, anyway, after spending most of the off-season acting like normal, thoughtful teams. Oakland Raiders - Sport - Al Davis - NFL - Education
